Jayson Handy - Athlete Spotlight
SALISBURY, Md. – Jayson Handy is one of the leaders returning for the Wicomico High School boys basketball squad following a season that saw the Indians fall in the 2A state title game to Patterson in College Park.
Handy calls it a great experience.
The then-sophomore put in a great effort, leading the Indians in scoring with 14 points, while adding five rebounds and two assists.
That experience that will help him moving forward, as he hopes to take the reigns as a leader on and off the court.
After WiHi lost a number of seniors from that sensational team, he is showing leadership in his work during the off-season.
His workouts are meticulous. Including drills to increase his vertical, his twitch muscles, and a focus on getting bigger on the court.
“My jumping abilities. I think I need to work on my jumping abilities, my footwork, and me talking on the team as a leader and being there for my team and knowing what to do.”
Adding 35 pounds to his frame in the off-season is just one thing that can help him succeed in his junior year and beyond. Handy says becoming a team leader on the court and in the locker room are also goals of his.
“[I’ve] been working on talking, like talking around people like hey I didn’t get my talking abilities right, I need to talk to the team as a leader. I think that’s what we need this year.”
As for beyond high school, Jayson has made no commitments, but says he has received interest from division one schools, adding that head coach Butch Waller has been a guide for him along the way.
The 6-2 215-lb forward-center isn’t just excelling on the court, he also brings a 4.1 GPA to the table.
WiHi begins their season December 3 against Easton.
