Ronnie Satchell - Athlete Spotlight
SALISBURY, Md. – Ronnie Satchell has etched his name in WiHi athletics history with his play, and leadership, on and off the field.
Satchell finished off his high school football career with a touchdown run in the Eastern Shore Bowl. Now the time has come to write the next chapter of his football journey.”I don’t want to be too far away from family. I want them to be able to come to the games and support me.”
Armed with a 3.65 GPA, along with plenty of game tape, Satchell and WiHi head coach Isaiah Taylor have been communicating with colleges including Towson, Frostburg and Fairmount. The senior plans to major in sports medicine, and to continue to play football, either as a running back or slot receiver.
With that in mind, Satchell has been hard at work with the goal of adding 10-to-15 pounds to his 5-foot-8, 170-pound frame.
“He’s a leader, that’s the part that’s most important, and why I love coaching him is that you can always rely on Ronnie to get the guys going and keeping the focus and keeping our team culture upheld,” said Taylor. “As a coach, you pray for kids like that. And then work ethic wise, he’s the hardest worker, no complaints regardless of what you tell him, he’ll do what he’s told to do.”
There’s still work to be done in Salisbury.
Satchell is now a leader for the school basketball team, one that went all the way to the state final in the spring. An early season game with North Dorchester, where the Indians gave up 81 points, proved to be a wake up call.
“We stressed defense. Defense, defense, defense. And we know now if we can hold our opponents to few points, and we score a lot then there’s no way we can be beat,” Satchell said.
He hopes that his high school career will conclude with another trip to college park.
